First attested as ambla between 819 and 825. Derived from a prehistoric hydronym Proto-Indo-European *amba (compare Proto-Germanic *ama- (“natural watercourse”)). The element land (“land”) is a later addition. Compare Amen, Emmeloord, Emer and Amdorf. See also West Frisian It Amelân.
