From Latin Alexandretta and Byzantine Greek Ἀλεξανδρέττα (Alexandrétta), from Alexandria + -etta (-ette: forming diminutives), from Ancient Greek Ἀλεξάνδρεια (Alexándreia, Alexandria), from Ἀλέξανδρος (Aléxandros, Alexander) + -ειᾰ (-eia, -ia: forming place names). Equivalent to Alexandria + -etta. Doublet of Alexandria, Iskenderun, Kandahar, and Scandaroon.
