Etymology

From Middle High German alabaster, derived from Latin alabastrum, from Ancient Greek ἀλάβαστρος (alábastros), from earlier ἀλάβαστος (alábastos, alabaster vase). Cognate with Gothic 𐌰𐌻𐌰𐌱𐌰𐍃𐍄𐍂𐌰𐌿𐌽 (alabastraun).[1]
