A folk etymology states, à- (nominalizing prefix) + kókó (reduplication of "to kidnap"), literally The ones who were kidnapped; This is said to come from the fact that many Àkókó settlements were raided and the people kidnapped and sold into slavery during the warring periods of the 1700s and 1800s.
