-trop
German
Alternative forms
- -trup, -drup
Etymology
With metathesis in the weakened ultima from Middle Low German dorp (“village”), from Old Saxon thorp, from Proto-Germanic *þurpą. While Low German placenames in -dorp were generally standardized with the High German equivalent -dorf, those with the less transparent variant -trop, -trup often remained unchanged.
