-ske

Danish

Suffix

-ske

  1. (now rare) Denotes a woman occupied with an activity, especially a profession.

Usage notes

In modern times, unsuffixed words are interpreted genderneutrally, hence most words formed with this suffix are dated. A notable exception is sygeplejerske (nurse), which is now a unisex term; the unmarked sygeplejer refers to a different profession.
