Etymology

From Proto-Finnic *-në-, probably from Proto-Uralic *-ne. Related to Ingrian -ne-, Karelian -ne-, Votic -ne-, and probably Hungarian -na-, -ne- (conditional mood markers).

Interfix

-ne-

  1. Marker of potential mood in verbs.
    lähtee → lähteneehe/she leaves/goes he/she will probably leave

Usage notes

Appended to the strong verbal stem. Exact form depends, as the infix may trigger assimilation or be subjected to it depending on the inflection type of the verb. In particular, -l-, -r- and -s- tend to assimilate the -n- (such as tulee tullee), while a stem-final -t- is assimilated into the -n- (such as huomaan huomannen). With nähdä-type verbs, the final -k- becomes -h- (such as näkee nähnee). The verb olla (to be) is suppletive and has exceptional potential forms with the stem lie(ne)-.
