Etymology

From Proto-Germanic *-รพuz. The related suffix *-ลรพuz is marginally attested in Gothic; only ๐Œผ๐Œฐ๐Œฝ๐Œฝ๐Œน๐ƒ๐Œบ๐‰๐Œณ๐Œฟ๐ƒ (manniskลdus) appears to match completely, although ๐Œฒ๐Œฐ๐Œฑ๐Œฐ๐Œฟ๐‚๐Œพ๐‰๐Œธ๐Œฟ๐ƒ (gabaurjลรพus), ๐Œฐ๐Œฟ๐Œท๐Œพ๐‰๐Œณ๐Œฟ๐ƒ (auhjลdus), ๐Œฒ๐Œฐ๐Œฟ๐Œฝ๐‰๐Œธ๐Œฟ๐ƒ (gaunลรพus) and ๐…๐‚๐Œฐ๐„๐‰๐Œณ๐Œฟ๐ƒ (wratลdus) also could be interpreted as containing that suffix instead of bare -รพus.

This suffix is sometimes said to not have been productive in Gothic anymore, meaning that any word in which it is found would have to be an inherited term from Proto-Germanic.
