Etymology

From -ія (-ija) + -ець (-ecʹ). Extracted from nouns such as англі́єць, італі́єць, валлієць (anhlíjecʹ, italíjecʹ, vallijecʹ) by rebracketing. Compare Russian -и́ец (-íjec).
