From Classical Mongolian ᠊ᠲᠠᠨ (-tan), from Middle Mongol [script needed] (-tan). Originally plural or collective of ornative (-t) and -тай (-taj). Cognate with Buryat -тан (-tan), Kalmyk -тн (-tn), etc.
