-жээ
Mongolian
Etymology
From a Proto-Mongolic suffix in *-j- related to converbial -ж (-ž), possibly extended with an emphatic particle.
Usage notes
- This verb form indicates a more distant past than the confirmative suffix -лаа (-laa). The suffix also carries secondary evidential force, implying that the speaker didn't directly witness the action.
- Unlike most other suffixes, this one doesn't obey vowel harmony
- For the distribution of -жээ/-чээ (-žee/-čee), same rules as in -ч (-č) apply.
