Pronunciation
Jagersma proposes /haj/ as original pronunciation, which later changed to /ΛeΛ/, with loss of initial /h/ and contraction of /aj/ to /eΛ/.
The initial /h/ would explain the Semitic reflection of the word ππ² (eβ-gal /β Δgalβ /) in words like Ugaritic π ππ (hkl /β hΓͺkalβ /), Arabic ΩΩΩΩΩΩΩ (haykal) or Hebrew ΧΦ΅ΧΧΦΈΧ (hΓͺαΈ΅Δl). Moreover, it is also supported by Ebla and Old Akkadian orthography, where the sign π (eβ) had the phonetic values /ha/ and /αΈ₯a/.
As for the final /j/, some Auslaut must be posited to account for the common writing πππ (eβ-a-neβ /β Δ'aneβ /) ("his/her house"), where the π (a) of the enclitic possessive pronoun ππ (a-neβ /β aneβ /, βhis/herβ) is spelled out and not contracted, as it normally would, with the preceding vowel. Compare with π©π³π (gemeβ-neβ /β gemΓͺneβ /, βhis/her female slaveβ), with contraction of π©π³ (gemeβ /β gemeβ /)'s final vowel and the /a/ of ππ (a-neβ /β aneβ /).
