From Proto-Tai *peːtᴰ (eight), from Middle Chinese (MC peat, “eight”). Cognate with Tai Dam ꪵꪜꪒ, Northern Thai ᨸᩯ᩠ᨯ, Lao ແປດ (pǣt), ᦶᦔᧆᧈ (ṗaed¹), Shan ပႅတ်ႇ (pèt), Tai Nüa ᥙᥦᥖᥱ (pǎet), Thai แปด (bpɛ̀ɛt), Bouyei beedt, Zhuang bet.
