From Maharastri Prakrit 𑀥𑀽𑀆 (dhūā), from Sanskrit 𑘟𑘳𑘮𑘱𑘝𑘵 (dúhitṛ, “daughter”). Compare Old Gujarati धूय (dhūya, “daughter”, nominative singular feminine), Old Punjabi ਧੀਅ (dhīa).
