Inherited from Proto-Turkic *āgïl (“fold, village”). Cognate with Chuvash ял (jal), Turkish ağıl, Bashkir ауыл (awıl), Yakut ыал (ıal). Compare also Hungarian ól, a Turkic borrowing.
