From Proto-Iranian *warj-, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *warȷ́-, from Proto-Indo-European *werǵ- (“to work”). Cognate with Persian ورز (varz) and برز (barz), Sanskrit वृज्यते (vṛjyate), Ancient Greek ἔρδω (érdō), Old English wyrċan (modern English work).
