Usage notes
Neither the gender, nor the declension class, nor the quantity of the vowel of the second syllable is known for sure. The only attested forms are the accusative singular ππΏπ»π»π΄πΉπΈ (fulleiΓΎ) (spelled to suggest long /iΛ/ in the second syllable) and genitive plural ππΏπ»π»πΉπΈπ΄ (fulliΓΎΔ) (spelled to suggest short /i/ in the second syllable). The analysis as a feminine i-stem is based on the assumption that the word contains the Proto-Germanic suffix *-ΓΎiz, which when added to the verb stem *fullj- would presumably have given *fulliΓΎiz.
The sense βnew moon festivalβ (translating Ancient Greek νΡομηνία (neomΔnΓa)) is surprising, as one might expect a word derived from ππΏπ»π»πΎπ°π½ (fulljan) to refer to the full moon rather than the new moon. Perhaps the sense is the completion of a month.
