From Proto-Germanic *gridiz. The only attested sense is a semantic loan from Ancient Greek Ξ²Ξ±ΞΈΞΌΟΟ (bathmΓ³s), which (though its primary meaning is "step") has a figurative meaning of "rank" or "degree".
