Of native Korean origin. From Middle Korean 한쇼 (Yale: hansyo). From 하— (ha-, “big; great”) + —ㄴ (-n) + (so, “bull, cow”). However, later contaminated by (, hwang, “yellow”) + (so, “bull, cow”). For a similar change, see 황새 (hwangsae, “stork”).
