Etymology

First attested in the Seokbo sangjeol (釋譜詳節 / 석보상절), 1447, as Middle Korean 졈〯다〮 (Yale: cyěm-tá). Originally meant "to be young" generally, including children, but became limited to the upper range of youth when 어리다 (eorida), originally meaning "to be foolish", began to mean "to be little; to be young".

Pronunciation

  • (SK Standard/Seoul) IPA(key): [ˈt͡ɕɘ(ː)mt͈a̠]
  • Phonetic hangul: [(ː)]
    • Though still prescribed in Standard Korean, most speakers in both Koreas no longer distinguish vowel length.
