발명

Korean

Etymology

Sino-Korean word from 發明. The "invention" sense is probably a nineteenth-century semantic loan from Japanese 発明(はつめい) (hatsumei); the "explanation; excuse" sense is the historical sense.

    • 1840 or 1900, 계여ᄀᆞ [Song of Advice for My Daughter], quoted in 딸에게 부치는 노래 [ttarege buchineun norae, Songs Sent to a Daughter], Idam Books, published 2021:
발명 밧비ᄒᆞ면 도분 시니 / ᄉᆞᄉᆡᆨ 보와가며 노긔 풀인 / 종용이 나아안ᄌᆞ ᄎᆞ례 발명ᄒᆞ면 / 부모임 우스시고 용셔 ᄒᆞ시리라
      balmyeong-eul batbi-hamyeon dobun-man pil geo-sini / sasaeg-eul bowa-gamyeo nogui-ga purin hu-ui / jong'yong'i naa-anja charye-ro balmyeong-hamyeon / bumoim useusigo yongsyeo-reul hasirira
If you hasten to explain, you will only invoke their anger. Look at their expressions, and once their bad mood has passed, quietly sit in front of them and explain things one by one; your parents-in-law will laugh and forgive you.
