First attested in the Neung'eomgyeong eonhae (楞嚴經諺解 / 능엄경언해), 1461, as Middle Korean 믈드리다 (Yale: multulita).

Equivalent to 물들— (muldeul-, “to take up colour”) + —이— (-i-, causative suffix) + —다 (-da).
