Etymology

Of native Korean origin. 문드리다 (mundeurida, to drop) + 지다 (jida, passive-marking suffix).

문드리다 (mundeurida) is not attested independently in mainland Korean sources, and now survives only in Jeju and in this derived verb.

Verb

문드러지다 • (mundeureojida) (infinitive 문드러져 or 문드러지어, sequential 문드러지니)

  1. to fester and drop off (especially of flesh)
    나병이 걸리면 온 몸에 살이 문드러진대.
    nabyeong'i geollimyeon on mome sari mundeureojindae.
    They say that if you get leprosy, your flesh rots and falls off all over your body.
  2. (figurative) to be outrageous; to be emotionally intolerable (usually with (sok, “insides”) as a subject)
    가해자는 잘 살고 피해자는 평생 고통 받는 모습을 보면 속이 문드러진다.
    gahaejaneun jal salgo pihaejaneun pyeongsaeng gotong banneun moseubeul bomyeon sogi mundeureojinda.
