First attested in the Yeogeo yuhae (譯語類解 / 역어유해), 1690, as Early Modern Korean 므ᄌᆞ미ᄒᆞ다 (Yale: mucomihota). 무자맥질 (mujamaekjil, swimming) + 하다 (-hada, to do, light verb deriving active verbs).
