First attested in the Worin seokbo (月印釋譜 / 월인석보), 1459, as Middle Korean 모ᄌᆞ라다 (mwocolata). Probably a compound of (mot) (modern (mot)) and ᄌᆞ라다 (modern 자라다 (jarada)).
