Etymology

First attested in the Neung'eomgyeong eonhae (楞嚴經諺解 / 능엄경언해), 1461, as Middle Korean 머키〮다〮 (Yale: mèkhí-tá). This contrasts greatly with 먹이다 (meogida).

Equivalent to (meok-, to eat) + (-hi-, passive suffix) + (-da, suffix conventionally given for citation forms)..
