First attested in the Gugeupganibang eonhae (救急簡易方諺解 / 구급간이방언해), 1489, as Middle Korean 둗긔 (Yale: twutkuy). From the adjectival root twutk- (“thick”, whence Middle Korean 둗겁— (twutkep-), Korean 두껍— (dukkeop-)) + noun suffix —의 (-uy).
