돈주
Korean
Etymology
돈 (don, “money”) + 주(主) (ju), literally 'owner/master of money'. Described as a recently coined term by North Korean defectors, it probably was coined after the emergence of a new, influential, and wealthy group of individuals that originally earned their money from trade and activity within China and the Jangmadangs during and after the Arduous March.[1]
Noun
돈주 • (donju)
- (North Korea, neologism) nouveau riche, the new money of North Korea.
- Synonym: 벼락부자 (byeorakbuja, South Korean)
