First attested in the Hunmong jahoe (訓蒙字會 / 훈몽자회), 1527. Presumably from Old Korean *tobɨi.

Was further compared to Proto-Japonic *tupiyay and Middle Japanese つひ𛀁 (Modern (つい) (tsuie)) meaning expenses.
