First attested in the Seokbo sangjeol (釋譜詳節 / 석보상절), 1447, as Middle Korean 노리〮개 (Yale: nwòlíkày). From 놀— (nol-, “to play”) + —이 (-i, nominalizing suffix) + —개 (-gae, instrumental suffix).
