냄비
Korean
Etymology
First attested as Early Modern Korean 남비 (nampi) in the Maeilsinmun (매일신문), 1898, June 2nd, borrowed from Japanese 鍋 (nabe, “pot”).
This form reflects a shift in pronunciation due to umlaut (regressive assimilation by the second vowel ㅣ (i)). Compare now-proscribed 남비 (nambi).
Pronunciation
- (SK Standard/Seoul) IPA(key): [nɛmbi] ~ [ne̞mbi]
- Phonetic hangul: [냄비/넴비]
