Etymology 1
First attested in the Beonyeok nogeoldae (飜譯老乞大 / 번역노걸대), 1517, as Middle Korean ᄂᆞᄆᆞ새 (Yale: nomosay). A compound of ᄂᆞᄆᆞᆯㅎ (nomolh) / ᄂᆞᄆᆞᆯ (nomol, “vegetable”) (> Modern 나물 (namul)) + 새 (say, “grass”), the latter also found in Modern 억새 (eoksae), 속새 (soksae), etc.
