Inherited from Old Javanese lawā, lawah, lalawā, lalawah (“bat”), from Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *kula-la(m)baR (“bat”), from Proto-Austronesian *lawaR (“flying squirrel”). Compare to Balinese ᬮᬯᬄ (lawah, “bat”).
