From Proto-Karen *ʔbwaᴬ (“white”) (Luangthongkum, 2019) or *ʔwa³ (“idem”) (Burling, 1969), from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *b/s-wa (“white; yellow; bright”). Cognate with Pa'o Karen ဗွာ, S'gaw Karen ဝါ (wah), Western Pwo ဘွၩ.
