Sylheti

Etymology

Inherited from Sanskrit शिलहट्ट (śilahaṭṭa, market upon stones), from शिल (śila, stone) + हट्ट (haṭṭa, market), referring to the rocky landscape of the place. Due to another name, শ্রীহট্ট (srihoṭṭo), the first component was confused with श्री (śrī, splendid). Cognate with Bengali সিলট (śiloṭ), Assamese ছিলঠ (siloth).
