Inherited from Old East Slavic *ꙗ́сьнь (*jásĭnĭ), from Proto-Slavic *àsenь, *àsenъ, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *ṓˀsenas, from Proto-Indo-European *Hh₃es-(e)nos, from *Heh₃s-. Cognate with Russian я́сень (jásenʹ), Old Polish jasień.
