Etymology
Compound of 韋駄天 (idaten, “Skanda (Buddhism)”) + 走り (hashiri, “running”, the 連用形 (ren'yōkei, “continuative or stem form”) of verb 走る hashiru, "to run"), from a story of Skanda running very fast to catch demons who had stolen holy relics.[1][2][3][4][5] The hashiri changes to bashiri as an instance of rendaku (連濁).
First cited to 1719.[1]
