Etymology
Alternative form of 羯鼓, changing out the first character 羯 (katsu, “the Jie people”) for 鞨 (katsu, “leatherwork; shoe”). Note the difference in the radicals on the left of each character: the former has 羊 (“sheep”), while the latter has 革 (“leather”).
This form appears to be less common in books.
