Etymology

Alternative form of 羯鼓, changing out the first character (katsu, the Jie people) for (katsu, leatherwork; shoe). Note the difference in the radicals on the left of each character: the former has (“sheep”), while the latter has (“leather”).

This form appears to be less common in books.
