Composed of 糟糠 (sōkō, “sake lees and rice bran”, by extension, “poor, coarse, unrefined food”) + の (no, “possessive particle”) + 妻 (tsuma, “wife”).[1][2][3][4][5]
Calque of Literary Chinese 糟糠之妻 (zāokāngzhīqī).
First attested in a text from the 1170s.[2]
