Derived from Ainu ソラㇷ゚チペッ (so rap ci pet), in turn a compound of Ainu so (waterfall) + v. rap (to descend, plural form of ran) + ci (plural nominalizing marker) + pet (river).[1] The kanji spelling is an example of ateji (当て字).
