Etymology
Compound of 毛 (ke, “hair”) + 綿 (wata, “stuffing, batting”) + 鴨 (kamo, “duck”), likely so called for the use of eiderdown.[1][2][3]

As with many terms that name organisms, this term is often spelled in katakana, especially in biological contexts (where katakana is customary), as ケワタガモ.
