Etymology
Compound of 格 (kaku, “grammatical case”) + 助詞 (joshi, “grammatical particle”).[1][2][3][4][5]
Coined by linguist 山田孝雄 (Yamada Yoshio) in his work 日本文法論 (Nihon Bunpō-ron, “Treatise on Japanese Grammar”), published starting in 1902.[1]
