Etymology
Coined[1] or borrowed from Chinese 營養 (yíngyǎng, “to nourish the body”)[2] in the end of the Edo period. The both spelling 栄養 and 営養 were used until the establishment of 栄養研究所 (“the Institute of Nutrition”) in the Home Ministry in 1920 and the publication of 『栄養』 by Japanese scientist Tadasu Saiki in 1926, and thence 栄養 has been mainly used.[2]
