Compound of 張り (hari, “pasting something flat”, the 連用形 (ren'yōkei, “continuative or stem form”) of verb 張る (haru, “to paste something flat”)) +‎ 子 (ko, diminutive suffix). So called for the process of pasting layers of paper to a framework to build up the model.
