Compound of (ne, sleeping, the 連用形 (ren'yōkei, continuative or stem form) of Old Japanese verb nu, modern 寝る neru, “to sleep”) + (toko, place; raised area, raised bed).[1][2] The toko changes to doko as an instance of rendaku (連濁).
