Etymology
Compound of 寝 (ne, “sleeping”, the 連用形 (ren'yōkei, “continuative or stem form”) of Old Japanese verb 寝 nu, modern 寝る neru, “to sleep”) + 床 (toko, “place; raised area, raised bed”).[1][2] The toko changes to doko as an instance of rendaku (連濁).
