Etymology

Unknown. Attested from at least the sixteenth century.[1] Compare 蕪(かぶ) (kabu, “turnip”) or 鏑(かぶら) (kabura, “turnip-shaped whistle”).[2] Kokugo Dai Jiten notes a suggestion from Nippo Jisho (1603) that me refers to seaweed,[1] but compare also 芽(め) (me, “sprout; bud”). See also 和布(わかめ) (wakame).
