Etymology

Appears to be a coinage in Japan as a replacement for the Chinese-derived term 監獄 (kangoku, prison, jail).[1] Analyzable as a compound of (kei, penance, penalty) + (mu, work; something that must be done) + (sho, place).

Attested in the 現代用語辞典 (Gendai Yōgo Jiten, Modern Term Dictionary) of 1925.[1]
