Shift from Old Japanese 七日 (nanuka),[1][2][3][4][5] attested in the Man'yōshū of circa 759 CE;[2] ultimately from Proto-Japonic *nanuka.

The nanoka reading is first cited to a text from the late Edo period.[2]
