From Proto-Ryukyuan *mawari (whence Kunigami まーすん (māsun), Miyako まーㇲ゙さまーㇲ゙ (māzsāmaz), Okinawan まーすん (māsun)), from Proto-Japonic *mar- (to die) (whence Hachijō Japanese まるぶ (marubu)).
