Etymology
From earlier makokoro, from 真 (ma, “true”) + 心 (kokoro, “heart”).[1][2] The kokoro changes to gokoro as an instance of rendaku (連濁).
First attested in Ochikubo Monogatari, written some time in the late 10th century.[1]
